The little mashup with the big backstory.
There’s one mashup I’ve been working on for ages. A mashup of Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles and Tribute by Tenacious D. I’ve only been making mashups for just over a month now so while I’m sure it’ll work, I’ve been chipping away at it, waiting for my skills to catch up with my imagination.
So I was heartbroken when I heard that not only had White Panda beat me to it, it was also good enough to be included in Bootie Mashups’s Top 10 of October. I wondered if I should even bother, if someone else got there first.
Also around the end of October, William Maranci shot to the top of Reddit’s r/mashups with his take on a mashup of Intergalactic by Beastie Boys and Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr. It’s a lot of fun, but this opened up a whole new kettle of fish in the Mashup community about the ethics of remaking a mashup that someone else had already made.
Adriana from BootieMashup explains it all so much better in this blog post than I ever could, but as a part the debate between Maranci, Tim from Radio Clash and Pom Deter, Pom suggested that if people were going to redo old mashups, then they should at least credit the original producer and maybe call it a ReBoot.
Then I was hit by a small bolt of inspiration. PomDeter’s biggest hit is Call Me A Hole, a mashup of Nine Inch Nails’ Head Like A Hole and Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe. Head Like A Hole was famously remade as Ashley O’s On A Roll for Netflix’s Black Mirror, so why not have a bit of fun with the whole remake/reboot concept and reboot Pom’s classic mix with Ashley O’s reboot of Nine Inch Nails. It seemed like such an obvious idea but as far as I can tell it’s never been done before.
So enjoy Call Me A Roll!
Songs Used:
On A Roll by Ashley O (Miley Cyrus)
Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen
P.S. Turns out White Panda’s Watermelon Tribute is the INVERSE of what I’ve been working on and when I asked Twitter, the verdict was that inverse mixes are fair game so I’ll be finishing that ASAP!
